This genius succeeded mixing 66 tracks into one hour set and made it all sound incredible. Yes, you read it right; 60 minutes -> 66 tracks. A few days ago I got a press release in the e-mail from Hammarica Management, telling me about two Vancouver based producers; DJ Mikas and DJ Sage. We don’t post all press releases and/or promotional kits we receive however the “High and Dry” grabbed my attention. It’s progressive, it’s catchy, it makes you wanna dance, what else can you ask for?

Mikas and Sage are on a roll with a string of quality productions. Their latest two releases ‘Shaken Not Stirred’ and ‘Eternal’ were signed on Terminal-4 Records and Black Hole Recordings respectively. Now it’s time for them to strike on Progressive Grooves again with a massive anthem.

High and Dry is a genre-crossing tune combining elements of Prog, Trance and Tech together in one. The music video kicks off with a rock-solid Prog beat and a tweaking sound slowly building up the tension. We see a lost soul walking the empty, cold streets of a major city at night, with no plan nor destination. When the tweaking ends in a frenzy, a chunky trance melody takes over; nicely fitting with the big bass line. The scenes switch back and forth to the after hours club where Mikas and Sage are rocking it.

The release offers two mixes: the DJ Mikas High Score Mix which is the one featured in the music video, and the Original Mix which has a more electro feel to it.

Basil O’Glue is one of those underdogs who will make a huge impact to the way of EDM in 2012 – in my opinion. As far as I know, Basil is coming out with an album in 2012, he’s already been confirmed to perform at the famous Luminosity Beach Festival in Holland and I am sure he’s got a bag full of other surprises for 2012.

This Friday I had the pleasure and opportunity to attend Montreal’s renowned festival named Igloofest. If you’ve never heard of it, it is basically an outdoor rave that lasts 3 weekends in the middle of January winter. Yes. WINTER – Fortunately, yesterday it was only zero degrees Celsius or so (32 Fahrenheit for our friends down south)  therefore it was very hot compared to the usual -15’s we get here. The bad part is that it rained a few hours before so some spots of the dance floor had huge puddles of mud and water… but no matter! No one really cared and we splashed and shoved our way through the night because GREEN VELVET was killing it!

Now for those who read my reviews, you know that I am a trance head so I unfortunately I cannot give you a detail account of the set nor have enough experience to tell you if it was a good set or a bad set. However, I can tell you how I felt and what I saw. People were jumping, screaming, laughing and just all out crazy. The floor was wet and icy and I kept getting shoved left and right but it was fun! Now usually I hate that but for some reason, partying it up and knowing you don’t need to save up energy for another 4 hours is great (Green Velvet played from 10:30pm to 12:30am thus ending the night).

So I’ll be honest guys. The only two songs I know from the Green haired Mohawk dude is LA LA LAND and FLASH. And… I know Flash because SVD used to play it in his sets last year! Speaking of sets, it felt very progressive and he takes forever for a buildup. Maybe it’s like that for house. Maybe it isn’t. But I just know that I kept jumping and waiting for the drop that never comes which was kind of frustrating for me. I suppose House is much mellower that way, oh well.

Coming back to the festival’s itself; they’ve made huge improvements concerning line ups and interior décor versus last year’s fiasco (2 hours wait, no clear line ups, unrest clients… messy all around). This year, they’ve increased the body check people from 2 to 6, made big clear signs for directions, added line up gates, increased the number of bars, fire pits, portable toilets and also opened up the washrooms that’s usually only opened in the summer.

All in all, great time, crazy crowd, sick beats, wet socks, happy ears!

Hi everyone,

On New Year’s Eve, I had the pleasure to attend none other than BEN GOLD @ RedLite afterhours here in Montreal. Placed @  #269 on the controversial DJMAG poll, he like many other DJ’s is extremely underrated. But no matter, we know he is good and we are glad to have him without having 15000 other people shoving us back and forth like a rock concert mosh pit.

As some of you know, this is my 3rd time seeing Gold (and hearing ) this year. To be honest, I had to make the choice between Resolution with Axwell, Avicii, Dash and Gareth on the 1st vs Gold on the 31st.
Why did I choose Ben? Well for one thing I know I was guaranteed at least a good night with him. As for Resolution, the tickets were way too expensive imo and I am truly not a fan of Emery nor the type of House music Axwell plays. Oh well, to each his own.

Let’s talk venue first. RedLite FINALLY got some new comfy couches… and that’s about the entire positive I can say about that place. Speakers were bad (too loud!), that stage placed right in front of the middle/DJ was horrid (because whoever’s on it blocks the whole view for everyone else) and the clientele is the usual well… let’s just say the usual (creepy stoned/high people). However, they did somewhat improve the lightings… so I guess that is two positives.

So, starting off, his set was from 6am to 10am. OUCH – As usual, retarded hours and tired legs. The beginning of his set wasn’t great I must say. We can tell that he was tired and of course that he’d been drinking. Can you blame him? It’s New Years! Well, regardless, following a few mishaps in mixing and a few questionable song choice 2.5 hours in, the old Gold that we knew suddenly went from 2nd gear to overdrive. Tunes like Coldplay paradise, Koko, The bottle, Punk (If I remember correctly) and many othertop hits dropping one after the other was just too much for my legs but I stayed on and rocked it all out regardless.

I found the set as a whole was a great success with a feel of slightly darker stuff at the beginning, “housy” towards the middle (Gareth influenced I am sure) and all out awesome towards the end. His closing song was none other than Reverie, which I waited for all night long (Yes I would make endless love to that song if it was possible) and I have a feeling that it is definitely one of his favorite too.

All in all, an unforgettable night and a way to kick off 2012

Cube, Tang and I decided to select our most favorite tracks of the year 2011… let me tell you, that was not an easy task. There are so many amazing tracks that came out this year – it’s hard to remember them all. I would actually refer to the next 32 tracks as “32 Tracks (of 2011) You Must Hear Before You Die“. Why 32? Because “Top 10/Top 20/Top 50″ sounds so last year, admit that TOP 32 sounds so much better Some have been selected by Cube, some have been selected by Tang and some by me and we actually agreed on most of them.
